BASIC NETWORK TESTING

TO TEST THE COMPUTERS ARE TALKING TO EACH OTHER DO THE FOLLOWING STEPS

1 FIND THE I.P. ADDRESS

THIS IS DONE BY  CLICKING START

THEN TYPING IPCONFIG AND PRESSING ENTER

 

 

 

YOU CAN SEE ABOVE THE IPV4 ADDRESS OF 192.168.1.57 MAKE A NOTE OF THIS NUMBER

GET THIS FROM EACH MACHINE.

THEN ON ONE OF THE MACHINES YOU CAN USE THE IP ADDRESSES TO TEST THE NETWORK USING A PING COMMAND.

PING SENDS 4 PACKETS OF DATA TO AN IPADDRESS MONITORS THESE PACKETS AND AWAITS A REPLY.

 

 

 

 

 

IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE I SENT A PING TO 192.168.1.1 4 PACKETS OF DATA WERE SENT AND 4 WERE RECEIVED THEIR WAS NO LOSS OF PACKETS.

YOU CAN THEN ALTER THE PING COMMAND AS FOLLOWS

PING 192.168.1.1 –t THIS TILL CONSTANTLY PING AN IPADDRESS UNTIL A CONTROL THEN C IS PRESSED TO STOP THE SEQUENCE.

PING 192.168.1.1 –t –l 1024 THIS WOULD SEND A CONSTANT PING TO THE IP ADDRESS WITH A PACKET SIZE INCREASED TO 1 MEG

PING 192.168.1.1 –t –l 4096 WOULD SEND  CONSTANT PING TO THE IP ADDRESS WITH A PACKET SIZE OF 4 MEG.

TO SEND THESE RESULTS TO A FILE

PING 192.168.1.1 –t –l 4096 >> ping.txt

WHEN CONTROL C IS PRESSED THE RESULTS ARE WRITTEN TO THE LOGFILE

WHICH IN OUR EXAMPLE IS CALLED PING.TXT
